Song of the Day: Round 30 - Reeeemix

Hello! Back for the 30th edition of "Song of the Day"! Today's theme: the remix. Remixes have been a feature of electronic music for many years, and serve as valuable alternative interpretations of a set of sounds and ideas. Today I'll be posting many of my favourite remixes along side the original tracks. Why the originals? I think it's important to recognise the original artist's intention in creating a sound, as this gives the listener a better idea of how the remixer has revised or reinterpreted it.

One of the first remixes that made a big impact on me is Pendulum's remix of The Prodigy's Voodoo People. It's the first drum & bass track I ever heard! It takes a solid big beat/rave track and turns it into one of the more intense drum & bass tracks in my collection.

Another solid dnb remix is B-Complex's interpretation of Sleepless by Shapeshifter! Coming from Hospital Records' Shapeshifter remix album The System is a Remix, B-Complex has used the saxophone to create some truly soulful drum & bass. With that high a tempo it's often hard to capture serious emotion, but B-Complex is no amateur.

The man who has featured so often on my blog is also an expert remixer! Toddla T's remix of You Know Me Better by Róisín Murphy is clean dancehall, and with such a capable vocalist the track is full of feeling. If you're interested in more of her work, check out Moloko!

On the jazzier side, there's Kyoto Jazz Massive's remix of It Will Be by Reel People. The original is some solid broken beat jazz, but the remix just feels so smooth and coherent. It's so expertly done it doesn't even feel like a remix! In my opinion, if you've heard the remix but not the original and you can tell that it's a remix just by hearing it, it's not worth listening to. It's just too...ham-handed.

The second last remix I'll share is Osborne's take on Take It In by Hot Chip. It's a slow, emotional, Mylo-esque house take on an already great song. It brings out a slightly different angle with the same basic features, and that's exactly what a remix is meant to do. It's not a second too long either.

Finally, there's today's song of the day:

Cassius - I <3 U So (Skream Remix)

Obviously this is a take on Cassius's track I <3 U So. Some of the closer readers may remember this from my post on songs that don't need to drop. This remix shows that if it did drop, the result would be simply amazing. Enjoy the links!
